The United States Mission in Nigeria on Wednesday celebrated the 250th anniversary of American independence in Lagos, reaffirming its commitment to deepening trade, security, cultural and people-to-people ties with Nigeria.
The event, held at the U.S. Consul General’s Residence in Ikoyi, attracted senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, traditional rulers, religious leaders, business executives and other distinguished guests.
In his welcome address, the Consul General in Lagos, Mr Rick Swart, described Nigeria, particularly Lagos, as a place of innovation, resilience and boundless opportunities, saying his diplomatic assignment in the country had been the highlight of his career.
Swart, who is retiring from the U.S. Department of State at the end of July, expressed gratitude for the hospitality extended to him and his wife throughout their stay in Nigeria.
“I’m deeply grateful that you are here to celebrate America’s 250th Independence Day with us.
“Of all the places where my wife, Bonnie, and I could have concluded our diplomatic journey, I cannot imagine a better place than Lagos, Nigeria.
“Lagos is a city like no other, defined by creativity, resilience, enterprise and, above all, the warmth and generosity of the Nigerian people.
“The friendships we have built here will remain with us for a lifetime,” he said.
Swart expressed confidence that his successor would continue strengthening the enduring relationship between both countries.
The Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Mission in Nigeria, Mr Keith Heffern, said the celebration, themed “Freedom 250,” reflected both America’s 250-year journey and its aspirations for the future.
According to him, Nigeria has become one of America’s most strategic partners in sub-Saharan Africa, with Lagos serving as a critical hub for trade, investment and innovation.
“Our relationship with Nigeria has grown into one of the United States’ most important partnerships on the African continent.
“Nigeria is now the United States’ second-largest trading partner in sub-Saharan Africa.
” In 2025, two-way trade between our countries reached nearly 15.5 billion dollars, representing significant growth over the previous year.
“These are not merely statistics; they represent jobs, investments, opportunities and economic transformation for both Americans and Nigerians,” he said.
Heffern said the U.S. remained committed to expanding bilateral trade through the five-year U.S.-Nigeria Commercial and Investment Partnership being implemented with Nigeria’s Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment.
He said the partnership focused on advancing cooperation in the digital economy, agriculture and infrastructure to stimulate long-term economic growth.
On security cooperation, Hennessey said both countries continued to work closely against transnational organised crime and to strengthen maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.
“Our partnership extends beyond commerce. We are working together to combat criminal networks, improve maritime security, protect public health and create conditions for lasting prosperity,” he said.
The envoy also highlighted the growing cultural connections between both countries, noting that American and Nigerian music continued to influence audiences across the world.
He described Nigeria’s globally acclaimed entertainment industry as a powerful bridge connecting both nations and strengthening mutual understanding.
Speaking at the event, Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, congratulated the United States on its 250th Independence anniversary and described the relationship between both countries as one built on shared values, innovation and mutual prosperity.
Sanwo-Olu said Lagos, as Africa’s largest commercial city, remained committed to strengthening partnerships with the United States in trade, technology, education, healthcare and investment.
“The United States has continued to play a significant role in shaping global development, and Nigeria remains proud to count itself among its trusted friends and partners.
“Our relationship continues to grow across business, technology, education, healthcare and innovation, and we believe there is still enormous potential to achieve even greater things together.
“Lagos is home to one of the largest concentrations of American businesses in sub-Saharan Africa, and we remain committed to creating an enabling environment for investment, enterprise and shared prosperity,” the governor said.
Sanwo-Olu said the anniversary provided an opportunity to celebrate freedom while reflecting on the importance of knowledge exchange, innovation and partnerships that benefit both nations.
He wished the American people continued peace, progress and prosperity as they celebrated the historic milestone.
The ceremony featured cultural performances, music inspired by the Motown era, and networking sessions celebrating the enduring friendship between Nigeria and the United States. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
